ADVANCE MAGAZINE: "Umbrella Protection: Rain and Weapon?"

By Derek Armstrong, Correspondent

Being prepared is not the same as being paranoid. Self defense skills may—hopefully—never be needed. Depending where you live, you may or may not be allowed "weapons" for self defense. A knife can be considered a concealed weapon. A gun needs a permit (usually!). Both kill.

For the passive defenders out there—those who want to survive an unfortunate incident, but don't want to kill—there's the old stand-by "Cane-Fu"—so named because you use a walking stick or cane to beat off potential attackers. Or empty-handed techniques, such as gung-fu, karate, judo, which require skills and years of training. The training might be good for you, but Tai Chi might take 30 years to master. Karate can be learned quickly, mastered over time, but require a fit body. All forms of martial training are good for you!

But not everyone has the time, access or willingness to study a martial art, boxing, or wrestling. Along comes the perfect solution—the unbreakable umbrealla (a normal umbrella works in a pinch, too!). Combining the best of "Cane Fu" with a weapon that can be carried on airplanes, on the street, pretty much anywhere without a second glance from security, criminals or police. A cane works, too, but you have to overcome the ego-hit associated with a sturdy cane.

Caution: As with all martial arts, practicing or using these techniques can injure. Always consult experts!
