ADVANCE MAGAZINE: "Recession Bad for Our Health"
Previous studies in earlier recessions drew links to high stress and increased illness in times of stress. The Canadian Medical Associations 9th Annual National Report Card on Health Care reinforced the effects of recession and stress on health. With responses from 4000 adults, the survey found that 25% of Canadians were spending less money and time on health:
- 25 per cent of respondents delayed or cancelled dentist appointments.
- 14 per cent delayed or stopped buying some prescription drugs.
- 22 per cent opted not to enroll in a recreational sport or activity.
- 16 per cent skipped meals.
- 32 per cent spent less money on food
- 23 per cent were losing sleep as they worried about money.
